Today in this article I'm going to tell you how to fix when you are unable to launch Hogwarts Legacy game on your Windows computer if or if you are facing crashing freezing issue with the game.
Step 1: Preparing shaders is taking time, so if you see black screen wait for some time
Now the first step is to wait for some time so whenever you launch the game uh preparing the center is taking a lot of time so if you see black screen and if nothing is happening just wait for some time and then just wait for the launch.
Step 2: Restart your PC
But still you're facing the problem then restart your computer and then launch the game so do not ignore this step just try it simply restart your computer once and after the system restart launch the game.
Step 3: Verify game files
Next step is to verify the game files so make a right click on the game and then select properties go to the local files tab and then click on verify Integrity of game files after the verification launch the game this has worked for many players so it might work for you.
Step 4: Set Ray Tracing to False and quality settings to 0 in GamerUserSettings file, put the file on "Read Only" could help not to reset it
Now the next step is to set the rate racing to false and quality settings to 0 in game user settings file so for this go to the File Explorer now go to C drive now open users folder now open your username folder now open app data folder now if you don't see app data over here on the top click on view and then put a check on the box which says hidden items put a check over here and you should be able to see app data if you have Windows 11 then somewhere over here you will see view option click on view then select show and then put a check on hidden items you should be able to see app data open app data folder now open the local folder now open this Hogwarts Legacy folder and then open the saved folder now open the config folder now open Windows no editor folder now over here you will find game user settings dot ini make a double click or you can open with notepad make a right click and then click on open with Notepad now if this is blank for you just ignore this step and move out move on to the next step.
Now scroll down now over here you can see B enable Ray Tracing Shadows if this is set if this is set to true you write down false so if this is true so just change it to false so do the same thing with enable Ray tracing Reflections false B enable Ray Tracing EO false so set everything to false for Ray tracing now scroll down now at the end over here you can see Ray tracing or Ray tracing enable in game if this is set to true type in false now go to file now click on Save now after you save it now make a right click on game user settings.ini select properties and put a check on read only and then click on apply okay after you saved it Now launch the game this is a work for many players so it might work for you still you are facing the problem in that case set up scale mode to Nvidia and is or none in game user settings file again if you have Nvidia card then open this game user settings.ini and find scale mode now in my case it's AMD FSR quality now over here you can change this to Nvidia NIS if you have Nvidia card you can try this so upscale mode you can write down Nvidia underscore NIS and then save it and then launch the game.
Step 5: Set UpscaleMode to NVIDIA_NIS or None in GamerUserSettings file, again put the file on "Read Only" could help not to reset it
So I'm getting this because I have set it to read only so may correctly properties if this is set to read only uncheck this apply okay and then open open the file and then find in Now find upscale mode over here now you can type in Nvidia underscore NIS and then you can go to save and then again make a right click over here and then set it to read only and then click on apply okay still you're facing the problem you can for upscale mode now this time you change it to none and then click on file and then click on Save now again set it to read only and then launch the game still you're facing the problem then here you can see just up above the upscale mode you can see bi scale mode modified if this is set to false you can try through and then save it and then again set it to read only and then learn then launch the game so try this this will work for many players so try Nvidia underscore NIS or you can try none and then launch the game and then check.
Step 6: Save the Save files folder somewhere and then delete the whole Hogwards Legacy save folder and start the game and the put the save files back
Next step is to save the save files folder somewhere and then delete the save game folder now for this again go to C drive users use your username app data local and open this open the folder over here over here open the saved and over here you can see save game so make a right click and copy this and you can paste it to the desktop once you have the backup.
Step 7: Delete the save game file and then launch the game
Now delete the save game file make a right click and then click on delete now once this is deleted Now launch the game and after you launch the game you can start the game and then put the save files back and then check still you're facing the problem then delete the complete folder so this time but before you delete the save game file let me inform you that you will lose all the game progress so if you agree open the Explorer C drive users your username then open app data open local and then delete this complete folder so make a right click and then click on delete now once this is deleted Now launch the gate.
Step 8: Disable overclocking and close all the overclocking applications, Disable Steam Overlay, close all the overlay apps
Now the next step is to disable overclocking so if you have overclocked your Hardware remove the overclocking so disable the overclocking and close all the overclocking application so if if you have like MSI After Burner or if you have revert tuner running so so close all the overclocking application also disable steam overlay now this has worked for many players so disabling the overclocking has worked for many player do not ignore this you can try this and then launch the game disable steam overlay now for this make a right click on the game select properties then uncheck the box which says enable the steam overlay while in game and then launch the game also close all the overclock overlay applications such as if you have Discord running or GeForce experience or Nvidia Shadow play overlay is enable so close all the overlay application and then launch the game.
Step 9: Launch the game from game installation folder, try running the game as an administrator, also try launching in compatibility mode
Next step is to launch the game from the game installation folder so for this maker right click on the game select manage then click on browse local files this will straight away take you to the game installation folder now over here you can see the game exe file just make a double click over here and try launching the game from here so make a double click and instead of launching the game from Steam try launching the game from the game installation folder it's still you're facing the problem then open the Phoenix folder and then open binaries folder win64 and then use this exe file so make a double click and try launching the game from using this exe file now still you are facing the problem in that case you can try Run the game as an administrator so go to the game exe file make a right click then select properties go to the compatibility Tab and then put a check on the box which says run this program as an administrator then click on apply click on OK and then launch the game from here so make a double click over here and try launching the game from here still you're facing the problem then open the Phoenix folder binaries folder win64 select this exe file make a right click and then again go to compatibility put a check on the box which says run this program as an administrator then click on apply click on OK and then try launching the game from here still you're facing the problem then then go back and this time try launching the game in compatibility mode so make a right click on the game XC file select properties go to compatibility and then put a check on the box which says run this program in compatibility mode for select Windows 8 first then click on apply click on OK and then launch the game if that does not work you can even try Windows 7 then click on apply click on OK and then launch the game do the same thing with Phoenix Open The Phoenix folder binaries win64 make a right click over here select properties compatibility put a check on the box over here and then select Windows 8 then click on apply click on OK and then launch the game if that does not work then select Windows 7 then click on apply click on OK and then launch the game now still you are facing the problem in that case remove administrator and then compatibility so still you are facing the problem then uncheck both the boxes click on apply click on OK Go open Phoenix binaries win64 make a right click and remove all the check boxes from compatibility and admin and then click on apply click on OK and follow the next step.
Step 10: Increase the virtual memory in windows
View Advanced system settings
Initial Size: 1.5 x Total Ram
Maximum Size: 3 X Total Ram
Now the next step is to increase the virtual memory now this has worked for many players so it might work for you now in my video I have shown the memory I have increased the memory I have 8 GB Ram so the minimum system requirement to play this game is 16 gigabyte so I have shown you uh as my Ram is only 8 gigabyte if you have 16 gigabyte you can calculate accordingly in my I have calculated as per 8 gigabytes so you can calculate as per 16 gigabyte so try increasing the virtual memory in Windows for this type in view Advanced system settings in Windows search box and then click on view Advanced system settings now click on the first settings and then go to the advanced tab and then click on change by default automatically manage paging file would be selected over here uncheck this box and then select the drive where the game is installed and then put a check on custom size and then for me this is working initial size is 1.5 into total Ram now check the total Ram in your computer mirror so you can open Windows settings go to system and then go to about and then over here you can see the total Ram in my case it's 8 gigabytes so it might be 16 in your case so in my case it's 8 gigabyte now you have to convert 8 gigabyte into megabyte for this open calculator on your computer and in my case total Ram is 8 gigabyte we have to convert this to megabyte into one zero two one zero two four that is 8192 megabyte so total Ram as per 8 gigabyte in megabyte it is 8192 for me so initial size is 1.5 into 200 Ram that is this is the total Ram into 1.5 that is 12 288 and maximum size for me it's three into total Ram now total Ram is 8192 in megabyte into three so for me it's two four five seven six enter the numbers over here and then click on set click on OK click on OK and then click on apply okay okay.
Step 11: Close OBS, close all the background applications, also close all the browsers especially Chrome
Now the next step is to close OBS now if you have OBS running on the computer so make sure that you close obs and then launch the game also close all the background application so make sure only the Steam and the game is running rest close everything including all your browsers so especially if the Chrome is running close Chrome so close all the browsers close all other application which is running on the computer you can quit from here also if you have multiple application running so close everything and then launch the game.
Step 12: Allow the game exe file to your antivirus program/Windows Security and Firewall
Next step is to allow the gaming exe file to antivirus program now if you have any third party antivirus make sure that you allow the game exe file to your anti-virus program now if you are using Windows security then open Windows settings and then if you have Windows 11 on the left hand side on Windows 11 you will have an option privacy and security so in Windows 11 click on privacy and Security in Windows 10 click on update and security then click on Windows security now click on virus and thread protection scroll down at the end you you will see manage a ransomware protection click on it then click on allow an app through control folder access click on yes to allow now click on add an allowed app then click on browse all apps now go to the game installation folder so if the game is installed in C drive open C drive program files x86 now open the Steam folder open the steam apps folder now open the common folder over here you will find the game folder in my case it's in different drive so open the steam folders steam apps common and then open the game folder and then select this exe file now click on open again click on add an allowed app then click on browse all apps this time open the Phoenix folder and then open the binaries folder win64 folder select this exe file then click on open Now launch the game still you're facing the problem then open control panel so type in control panel in Windows search box and then click on control panel now click on system and security now click on Windows Defender Firewall now click on allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall and then click on change settings on the top and then click on allow another app click on browse again go to the game installation folder open the game folder once you open the game folder select this exe file now click on open now click on add in my case this is already added again click on browse and then go to Phoenix binaries win64 select this exe file now click on open now click on ADD once both the exe files are added over here now click on OK and then launch the game.
Step 13: Allow the game exe file to exploit protection
Now the next step is to allow the game exe file to exploit protection so type in exploit protection in Windows search box and then click on exploit protection now over here go to program settings over here and then click on add a program to customize and then click on this plus sign over here and then click on choose exact file path and then go to the game installation folder once again and open the game folder after you open the game folder select this exe file now click on open this will open a new window over here scroll down over here you can see control flow guard put a check on the box which says overwrite system settings and turn off click on turn off so turn this off and then click on apply click on yes to allow now again click on this plus sign and then click on choose exact file path and this time open the Phoenix folder binaries win64 select this exe file now click on open and again on this new window scroll down and then put a check on over here you can see control flow guard put a check over here and then turn this off click on apply click on yes to allow Now launch the game.
Step 14: Do a clean installation of graphics driver

Now next step is to do a clean installation of your graphics driver so if you have Nvidia card go to Nvidia website if you have AMD card go to AMD website I'm showing for NVIDIA now go to Nvidia website now select your graphic card from the list make sure that you select your graphic card over here and then select the right operating system so if you have Windows 10 select Windows 10 if you have Windows 11 select Windows 11 now click on start search and then scroll down and then the latest GeForce game ready driver right now is 528 period two four click on get download and then again click on download and then once the download is complete run this exe file now once you run this exe file you will see the screen click on agree and continue and then put a check on the box which says custom and then click on next and then put a check on the box which is perform a clean installation make sure that you put a check over here and then click on next and after the installation restart your computer and then launch the game.
Step 15: Roll back graphics driver
Now still you're facing the problem in that case roll back graphics driver now for this I'm showing for NVIDIA so go to Nvidia website now again select your graphic card from the list make sure that you select your graphic card over here and then select the right operating system so if you have Windows 11 select Windows 11 and then click on start search and then scroll down right now the latest one is the latest game ready driver is five to eight period four nine so you can try five to eight period two four now for many users installing this five to eight period zero two has one so you can click on get download download it run the exe file but when you install it make sure that you put a check on the box which says perform a clean installation do a clean installation and then restart the computer and then launch the game so this has worked for many players so try this.
Step 16: Install Visual C++ Files
Next step is to install visual C++ file so if you are receiving C++ error while launching the game even if you are not receiving the install visual C++ file this has worked for many players so it might work for you so over here you can see visuals to 2015 17 1922 so it will take you to Microsoft website download x86 and x64. so download both x86 and x64 version and then run both the exe file now when you click on the exe file now you might see the install option or you might see the repair option so if you click on if you see repair click on repair if you see the install option click on install run the second file as well again if you see the repair option click on repair if you see the install option click on install in my case I have already installed so that's why it's telling me to restart my computer so once you once it is installed you will see a restart option like this so make sure that you restart a computer and after the system restart launch the game.
Step 17: Update your Windows to the latest version, 22H2
Now the next step is to update your windows to the latest version now this is important so many users updated the windows to the version 2 to H2 and after that they were able to launch the game so make sure that you update your windows to the latest version so in my case I've already installed this 2 to H2 so make sure your windows is up to date and then launch the game do not ignore this step.
Step 18: Install Media Feature Pack: If you are using N versions of Windows or switch normal Windows 10/11 editions
Now the next step is to install media feature pack now for this if you have Windows in addition so if you're using Windows 10 n or Windows 11 and Edition then install media feature pack now for this go to this link the link is provided in the video description it will take you to Microsoft website now over here you have to install this media feature pack so scroll down over here you can see Windows 10 and Edition open the settings apps apps and features so open the settings and then go to apps apps and features then click on optional features over here now click on add a feature over here and then type in media feature pack over here I don't have Windows 10 and Edition I have Windows 10 home so if you have Windows 10 n you might see media feature pack over here so put a check on the box media feature pack and then click on install and then after installation restart the computer and then launch the game similarly if you have Windows 11 then open settings go to apps optional features then click on view features type in media feature pack select it install it restart a computer and then launch the game.
Step 19: Install DirectX

Now the next step is to install DirectX now for this copy this link the link is provided in the video description open this link in the browser it will take you to Microsoft website and over here click on download this will download DirectX so click on download then run this exe file and install DirectX restart the computer and then launch the game.
Step 20: Disconnect multiple monitors, unplug all the USB devices, Logitech wheel, joystick, Razer Tartarus gamepad, vjoy, turn off Razer Synapse
Next step is to disconnect multiple monitor so if you have multiple monitor setup then disconnect it try launch in the game one single monitor unplug all the USB devices so if you have these devices connected disconnected also if you have these software running close this software so make sure only the game and the steam is running rest flows everything including all your browsers also if you have under voltage your computer remove the Underwood and then launch the game.
Step 21: Update System BIOS
Next step is to update your system bios now go to your system manufacturer website so if you have a Dell computer go to Dell website if you have Lenovo computer go to Lenovo or if you have HP computer go to HP website so go to your system manufacturer website select your model number so you enter your service tag or service code for your model number Select the right model number then find the latest bias available and then update your system bios now if you have a laptop in case of laptop make sure charger the AC adapter is connected to the computer when you are updating the BIOS and the battery on your computer on your laptop is more than 10 percent and then update your system bios during the BIOS update your system will restart do not unplug the power cable when it's updating the BIOS once the BIOS update is complete log into your computer and then launch the game.
Step 22: Try Windowed mode, turn off Ray Tracing, DLSS, turn off RTX, lower down graphics settings
Now try Windowed mode turn off Ray tracing turn off dlss turn off RTX lower down Graphics settings so if you are if you are able to launch the game then launch the game first now after you launch the game open settings and then go to display options and over here if window full screen is selected select Windowed mode confirm it and then if this is set to 4K you can try 1920 into 1080p you can even lower down more and then check now over here you can see up skill type now for me none is working fine so you can try none you can even try Nvidia NIS for NVIDIA card users so try select selecting Nvidia NIS or you can even try AMD fsr1 AMD fsr2 so try try one by one you can try different settings and then check which one is working fine for you now also scroll down you can turn this Nvidia reflex low latency if this is on turn it off if that does not work you can turn it on and then check try disabling vsync and then check lock the frame rate at 60. for me this is working fine you can also turn off HDR and then check turn off motion blur so try to turn off each settings and then check which one is working fine for you now go to Graphics option now over here scroll down if Ray tracing is on turn off retracing and over here if everything is set to ultra you can try high you can even select medium or you can even try low apply the settings and then check the performance.
Step 23: Move the game folder to C drive and then launch the game
Now still you're facing the problem then the next step is to move the game folder to C drive now this has worked for many players so it might work for you so if you have installed the game on different drive you can make or right click on Steam then select properties and then go to local files and then you can move install folder and you can select C drive and then click on move and once you move the game to C drive Knight now you can try launching the game.
Step 24: Uninstall and reinstall the game to the different drive (Try SSD first:
The last step is to uninstall and reinstall the game to different drive so first of all uninstall the game then click on uninstall now go to the game installation folder so wherever the game is installed go to the game installation folder open the game folder now over here make a right click and then click on delete after you have uninstalled the game so make sure that you uninstall the game first and after you have uninstalled delete this game folder and then restart the computer make sure that you restart you computer after this and after the system restart reinstall the game to different drives so if you have another SSD or HDD try installing the game to different drive and then check.
